Marriage the traditional Bengali way entails a wide array of colorful and elaborate rituals. These are not only fun filled and enjoyable but also have a deep significance in the married life of the couple. The marriage rituals are spread over three days. There are also many pre wedding and post wedding rituals. These customs not only involve the couple but also the family and friends of both the sides. Every custom is observed with much dedication and faith. Bengalis are known for their love of all things cultural and their marriage events are ample proof of that.

Christian weddings

The Christians regard marriage as an irrevocable contract between a man and woman to be united for the rest of their lives. They regard marriage as a form of worship and believe it to be intended by God for the happiness and welfare of mankind. Christian weddings are usually held in a church amidst much joy and celebrations. Similar to the other Asian weddings, Christian marriages too have their rituals and customs to be followed. The family and friends of the bride and the groom participate eagerly in the festivities.

Jain weddings

The Jains are a religious and peace loving community. Marriage to them is a sacred duty towards God. A typical Jain marriage follows traditional religious practices. These are observed with much dedication and fervor. There are several rituals that mark a typical Jain wedding. Similar to other Asian weddings there are customs and practices that are followed to solemnize the marriage.

Kannada marriages

Kannada marriages are relatively simple affairs. There is a number of interesting pre wedding rituals that are followed during a Kannada wedding ceremony. Nischay Tamulam is the fixing of the marriage alliance. The boy's parents go to the house of the girl and gift her clothes, fruits and coconut. The girls’ parents too visit the house of the boy and give him gifts. A priest matches the horoscopes and fixes an auspicious date for the occasion. The first religious rite that is celebrated prior to the wedding day is the nandi. This is when prayers are offered to God so that the marriage takes place without any hitches.

Malayalee wedding

The Malayalee wedding customs are observed by Keralites all over the world. Malayalee weddings are generally simple and do not have many religious rites to be performed. As with every Indian wedding a Malayalee wedding too has certain ceremonies to be performed prior to the main day and after also the wedding is over.
