Lights! Camera! Action! As well as the traditional photographer, these days no wedding is complete without a videographer to film the ceremony, the speeches, the first dance and the cutting of the cake. But out of the ranks of videographers who specialise in Asian wedding videos, how will you know which one to choose? This is the one film in which you will be the star of the show, so you want to feel confident that you’re going to look your best, that nothing will be missed and that the finished movie will be edited and produced to the highest standards.
Take a Long Hard Look
When you start talking to videographers about your wedding, be sure to ask to see some of their work – and preferably more than one piece of it. Cast a critical eye over the films they show you. Does the lighting look right? Is the focus sharp and clear? Is sound woolly or indistinct? Have they edited sympathetically or does the film jump from shot to shot and scene to scene?
Naturally, you’ll get what you pay for – be that one man with a hand-held camera or a whole team with lights, cranes and state-of-the-art technology. But you don’t want something too intrusive; and you certainly don’t want to spend all day filming your wedding rather than experiencing your wedding. What you need is a skilled and experienced director to call the shots and a cameraman who knows all the best angles.
At the same time, the video team need to know what they’re filming; the importance of the rituals and the most special moments. Experience of Asian weddings is the key here, while knowledge of the venue is an added bonus. Make sure the film maker’s expectations of the job are in line with yours. Do you want the whole day filmed or just certain aspects of it? Will he interact with your guests or keep his distance? Find out early on your discussions what he wants to charge and how his charges break down. In particular, make sure you know how much it will cost to order extra copies of the wedding video for family and friends.
Advice is at hand
If you are using an Asian wedding planner, they will be able to suggest a number of videographers that they know and trust, and they should be able to pick an ideal match for the type of wedding you are planning and the film you want to make. A good wedding video does so much to shape everybody’s memories of the wedding over the years, so it pays to make sure you’ve put this important task into the hands of someone who will excel at the job.
